LONHRO 2YO Fillies Keep Punching Above Their Weight as PIN SEC Wins Black Opal

12 Mar 19

The Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra boasts an impressive roll call of winners that includes the multiple Group 1 winners Trapeze Artist and Criterion.

But it is doubtful even that illustrious pair were any more impressive than Sunday's winner PIN SEC, who, like last year's Black Opal winner Encryption is by the ageless LONHRO.

The 2019 renewal boasted high quality but it was PIN SEC who blew them away to win by a widening 4 lengths.

Pin Sec Winning the 2019 Black Opal 2yo Gr3 1200m

Ten weeks after she exploded on the scene with a maiden win at Randwick, Pin Sec tracked the speed set by the high-priced Snowden pair McLaren and Rome and when Jason Collett pressed the button it was a matter of how far.

The only filly in the field, Pin Sec won by 4 lengths smashing the million dollar Pierro colt Rome with Exceed And Excel colt McLaren one and a half lengths further back in third.

PIN SEC spread eagles the field

With the $173,700 winner's cheque, Pin Sec moves her earnings to over $200,000 and is assured of a start in the Golden Slipper if that's the way trainer James Cummings elects to go.

"She looks a lot like dad, she's a lovely strong progressive filly," stable representative Darren Beadman said.

"She really surprised me how she jumped straight in to the bridle. She got into a lovely position but mid-race she was a little bit cramped by that horse having his first start. When she got into open spaces at about the 500m she really clicked into gear and won with a lot of authority.

"She's qualified (for the slipper), she a lovely filly and the team at Crown (Lodge) have done a fabulous job with her.

"James has really got his head around the two-year-olds and they are all well-placed and hitting the mark at the right time."

Pin Sec is the second foal of the top-class Commands (Danehill / Danzig line) mare Moderate who won four of her five starts including the Listed VRC Lexus Hybrid Plate.

Not covered in 2016, Moderate foaled a Street Boss (USA) filly on September 16 and was bred back to Lonhro.

LYRE winning the Gr1 Blue Diamond

Led by the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes winning Filly LYRE, Lonhro is having his best season with his two-year-olds since his champion son Pierro ruled in season 2011-12.

This season he has sired 70 individual winners from 159 runners.

His 2yo daughter PIN SEC became Lonhro’s 82nd individual stakes-winner and he also has 68 stakes-placed progeny.

Overall, Lonhro is the sire of 22 Stakes Winning 2yo’s.

This season LONHRO has sired 10 2yo Runners = 5 Winners including 3 Stakes Winners and 1 Stakes Placed with all his black-type 2yo’s being Fillies:

Amercement - Widden Stakes Gr3, Lyre - Blue Diamond Gr1, Pin Sec - Black Opal Gr3 & SP Athiri.

To put this in perspective, champion sire Snitzel has had 29 2yo runners; 5 winners; 2 stakes winners.

Lonhro commenced his stud duties in Australia in 2004 and the U.S.A. in 2012. His record shows:

Champion Australian Sire in 2010-11, second in 2011-12, third in 2009-10.

Leading Australian Sire of 2YOs in 2011-12.

Leading Australian Sire of 3YOs in 2010-11.

Leading Australian Sire by Winners in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

At the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Dynamic Syndications purchased just one yearling.

We only wanted to value add to our wonderful stable of yearlings we had already secured in 2019.

It’s never about numbers – it’s only about quality – to ensure we continue our philosophy to

We had identified a filly when we received and reviewed the catalogue that on genetics and the commerciality of the pedigree, we knew had flashing lights on it.

That was Lot 328 a beautiful Black Filly by LONHRO.

When we inspected her at the sales and found she was as stunning to look at as she was on paper and then, our vet confirmed she was low risk (perfect) on x-rays and had a Grade 1 (perfect) videoscope, she became our main target at the sale.

With a prized early foaling date of 19 August, our filly is out of the 2yo Brisbane winning mare MONALIESHA.

MONALIESHA is a half-sister to GEARED UP - a multiple stakes placed winner of 5 races. She is also a half-sister to the dam of SAUL’S SPECIAL - a Stakes Winning Gr2 placed 2yo winner with 5 race wins.

MONALIESHA is a daughter of the 2yo winning mare CERTAIN (by Golden Slipper winner – Rory’s Jester).

CERTAIN is a daughter of 2yo winning and sensational Gr1 Winning Sprinter SILVER TIP - a winner of 7 races she was a Gr1 winner of the NZ Railway Stakes and Gr1 placed in the Telegraph H.

SILVER TIP winning the Gr1 NZ Railway Stakes 1200m

In fact there are nine (9) 2yo winners on our filly’s pedigree page.

MONALIESHA has produced 5 foals to race, 4 winners (all city class) including Gr3 placed BILLY THE KID (by Savabeel) as well as GHERARDINI, OH CANDY and GO DAISY.

Our filly was identified genetically because she was from a grand-daughter of DANZIG.

That’s important because with the win by PIN SEC in the Black Opal, this LONHRO / DANZIG cross has now produced 45 STAKES WINNERS out of the total 82 STAKES WINNERS by LONHRO (55%).

Then we have the statistics that LONHRO has to date produced: 859 Winners; 82 SW; 68 SP.

He is a leading sire of 2yo’s this season sitting in 1st spot for Strike Rate, 2nd spot for Stakes Winners , 3rd spot for earnings, 4th spot for winners. His 3 Stakes Winning 2yo’s and 1 Stakes Placegetter are ALL FILLIES.

Also on the Australian Active Sires List LONHRO is in 2nd spot on Strike Rate, 2nd spot on Gr1 Winners, 7th spot on Earnings, 7th spot on Stakes Winners.

Another important fact is not only is LONHRO smashing it with his 2yo Fillies this season but he also is the sire of Gr1 VRC Oaks Winner ARISTIA (herself from a Danehill / Danzig line mare).

So he is getting juvenile sprinters and a 3yo Filly Classic Winner.

In summary:

We purchased a Beautiful Black Filly by bred on an awesome A+++ rating on a cross that’s produced 45 stakes winners.

She is by one of the Best Stallions in Australia, who is having a sensational year with his Fillies.

She is from a highly successful 2yo family and it’s a quality family full of stakes winners and metropolitan class winners.

She is a half-sister to 4 winners including a stakes performer.

A magnificent individual, with clean x-rays and endoscopic evaluation who moves with a silky smooth action.

It’s hard to buy Lonhro progeny because so few make their way to the open market as yearlings.

Dynamic Syndications have had enormous success with the breed based specifically upon knowing (through research) the right ones to buy on genetics and type.

We have raced 6 individual winners for earnings over $1.34 million in prizemoney.

Horses like PERPLEXITY - he won 9 races and over $410,000 as well as

SPECIFIC CHOICE – he won 6 races and over $407,000.

We also currently have our extremely promising last start city winner

SONDELON – he’s had 7 starts: 3 wins 1 second 1 third and $92,430

Then there has also been our filly DEFINE - a Gr2 placed Winner of 3 Races and $171,835 we purchased her for $80,000 as a yearling and sold her as a broodmare for $250,000.

WITCHES - a Multiple Sydney Winner with 3 Wins and over $171,460 and

ABERRATION has also won 3 races and $91,695.

Our LONHRO filly will be available later in the year.
