A $133,000 prize cheque for winning a Maiden is HUGE money, the equivalent earnings of winning a Group 3 or Listed event.
It was certainly the carrot for our team to aim at Race 1: The Valley @ Southside Cranbourne Plate, a Moonee Valley meeting transferred to Cranbourne.
The race carried total prizemoney of $60,000 with $33,000 on offer to the winner but wait… there was more!
An additional $100,000 Inglis Race Series Bonus was payable if the race was won by an eligible Inglis Sales Graduate paid up for the Inglis Race Series.

Our 3YO gelding JUVENAL (by Extreme Choice from Serious Satire) gave his Dynamic co-ownership team a wonderful return on investment when he led throughout to chalk up his first win at just his second career start.

Our terrific training team of Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr. presented our horse in outstanding order. The experience JUVENAL gained from his first race start ensured he was cherry-ripe to go on with the job, and JUVENAL didn’t let his trainers or ownership team down with a determined victory.
Punters got it horribly wrong when they allowed JUVENAL to head to the machine at the generous price of $9.00, rewarding his owners and connections with a handsome return to go along with the HUGE prizemoney.
These Inglis “XTRA” Bonus races are hard to win as leading trainers target the riches on offer. Owners love the thrill of winning such substantial prizemoney, and what makes these races so competitive is that you can only win your Maiden once. The lure of claiming such a big cheque to kick off a horse’s career is truly tantalising.
JUVENAL had been trained at the team’s Rosehill stable and we were confident he was up to the task of claiming an Inglis Bonus early in his career. At his first start, the form guide shows he ran second on debut at Port Macquarie and to the uninformed punter, that might look like being beaten “in the bush.”
However, that race was also an Inglis $100,000 XTRA Bonus event and the field was competitive. We took him four hours up the highway to have a crack at winning on debut but ran into another horse that was simply too good on the day. It was the race-fit favourite, and we felt the shorter distance, lack of experience and not being fully wound up combined against us.
The next Inglis XTRA Bonus that suited us was scheduled at Cranbourne Racecourse on 27 February over 1200m. This looked ideal. Right trip, fitter, more experienced and the three weeks between runs allowed his training team to present him in peak order. Importantly, Cranbourne is home to the Price/Kent Victorian stables, so JUVENAL didn’t need to travel on race day and could race on his home track.
So two weeks ago down the highway he went to Cranbourne, and the Price/Kent team did what they do best — trained the horse to be ready second-up to win the Bonus.
Interestingly, the market had punters fooled as they rallied behind another runner, Balance, sending it out at the short price of $1.45. That horse had only one previous start, had gotten well back and was well beaten in a race with only average ratings. Cranbourne is a track that favours horses up on speed with good early pace. JUVENAL had drawn Barrier 3 and is naturally a go-forward horse, while Balance had drawn Barrier 7 and was a get-back type.
We were not concerned about that runner, but we respected Carriedo, who had resumed well, beaten under a length, possessed tactical speed and had drawn Barrier 2. The market was generous again allowing it to start at $6.50.
Our game plan was simple — use our tactical speed, be positive early, cross and control the race. From the moment the gates crashed back until the camera flashed, JUVENAL and Jordan Childs led throughout.

It wasn’t rocket science, it was knowledge and experience. A stable that had polished our horse to sparkle and a rider who understood how the track would play, confident the stable had his mount ready to fire.
The Sectional times and comaprison to standard shows the competitive nature of the race:
Race Time: 1:11.31 (+9.66L) better than average
His Race Leader Sectionals were far better than average for each split.
1200m - 800m: 24.60 (+2.16L)
800 - 400m: 22.95 (+4.38L)
Last 400m: 23.76 (+3.12L)
JUVENAL proved what he can do and gifted his connections a reward of $133,000.
JOB DONE!
Jockey Jordan Childs was interviewed post-race for Racing.com and said:

“It was an advantage to be on speed, which it usually can be around here, and staying to the inside lanes.”
When asked about the tempo and the favourite being back last, he responded:
“Obviously he (JUVENAL) had that race experience the other day and put himself up on speed, so we wanted to use that. He jumped well and I was happy to take it up. He got his own tempo through the middle stages, kept it up around the corner and into the straight. He’s still learning and was waiting a little bit, but I always felt I was going to win. He’ll take great confidence from today and should go on with it.”
Jordan later recorded a message to our Dynamic owners:
“JUVENAL – Hi guys, well done to everyone involved. He was great today. He jumped quickly, went straight to the front, and although we were annoyed a bit from out wide, he got it pretty cheap. Comfortable through the middle stages, I was able to get some nice sectionals and ramp it up around the corner. He’s still learning and was floating a little, but each time Carriedo got close he kept fighting. I think he’ll improve again next time. Thanks.”
