23rd Gr1 Winner for LOPE DE VEGA as SHADOW OF LIGHT Wins Middle Park Stakes
23rd Gr1 Winner for LOPE DE VEGA as SHADOW OF LIGHT Wins Middle Park Stakes

LOPE DE VEGA
becomes the
only
stallion in 2024 season in Europe
to sire
5
Group 1 winners
as
SHADOW OF LIGHT
wins the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes for 2yo’s at Newmarket by an easy 4 lengths.
The
Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes
at Newmarket won impressively by
Shadow Of Light
, became the
23rd
Group 1 Winner
for
Europe’s Leading Sire Lope De Vega.
With a scintillating display at Newmarket, on Saturday, 28 September, Shadow Of Light emulated his illustrious three-quarter brother Earthlight.
Shadow Of Light was making his G1 debut on the back of an unlucky, fast-closing second placing in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at York.
After jumping away on terms, Shadow Of Light was held up at the rear of the six runners by William Buick before moving closer approaching the halfway point.
The Charlie Appleby-trained colt travelled strongly into the race towards the stands’ side approaching the 400m marker and quickened well to take up the running from Dash Dizzy and Whistlejacket at the 200m.
Shadow Of Light then hit the go button and streaked away from his rivals, hitting the line full of running to beat this season’s Prix Morny winner Whistlejacket by an easy four lengths.
Charlie Appleby said:
“I am delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, team Godolphin, and the team at home.
“It is nice to have a horse like him. He is a three-quarter brother to Earthlight, so there is plenty of pedigree on that page and, being by Lope De Vega, we were hopeful he would go on the (soft) ground.
“I would imagine we will put him away for the winter now and it will be a case of whether we look towards the 2,000 Guineas or a Commonwealth Cup programme. From his page, I would say he is a Commonwealth Cup horse. There is a lot of speed there and, as he gets stronger, he will probably get quicker.”
William Buick added:
“Shadow Of Light has really improved since the Gimcrack, when I was pretty sure he did not get the rub of the green. He has grown up mentally and I was really impressed by what he did today. He cruised through the race and picked up as he liked.
“There is plenty to look forward to heading into the winter. He is quick horse, and I am not sure how far he will get, but Charlie, the team and His Highness will have plenty of time to make up a plan.
“It is hard to be sure how they will pick up in this ground. This is the first time he has run on ground as soft as this, but he was electric and did today what he did last week at home.”
LOPE DE VEGA
was the Champion Sire in Europe in
2023
and he is again the Leading Sire in Europe in
2024.
His current resume reads: Sire of
939
(71%)
Winners;
23
Gr1
Wnrs;
74
Group Wnrs;
138
SWnrs;
240

after 9 months (75%) of the season, the Leader is …..
LOPE DE VEGA - Champion Sire
It’s no surprise because last season (

LOPE DE VEGA
“…never put off until tomorrow what you can do today”
Named after the seventeenth century Spaniard, Lope de Vega was one of several literary figures credited to utter this similar idiom. It is surely good advice when it comes to securing the attention of the stallion who bears his name.
After a decade of dominant service,
Lope De Vega
(by Shamardal), the dual Classic winner is in demand for good reasons.
All reputable bloodstock analysts include
Lope De Vega
on their lists of elite stallions because they know the stats.
It is near impossible to find a flaw in
Lope de Vega’s
production of world-class horses because this standout data is underpinned by a remarkably solid core of elite racetrack performers.
His global reach is amazing: from top-class sprinters in Australia, like
Santa Ana Lane, Vega One, Vega Magic and Gytrash,
to Group 1-winning milers in Europe such as
Belardo, Phoenix Of Spain and Zabeel Prince,
to the brilliant American runners such as
Newspaperofrecord and Aunt Pearl.
They come out running as 2yo’s and thrive with age and experience.
In fact, they are better as 4yo’s than they are as 2yo’s.
All of this should be no surprise considering
Lope De Vega’s
racing record and pedigree.
We have seen the influence and importance of his own sire, the successful Shamardal.
Whilst that giant of the breeding barn is no longer with us, in
Lope de Vega,
he did provide a son of the highest-quality worthy to carry forward his Sire’s exceptional status.
Local breeders are already familiar with
Lope De Vega’s
prowess as a sire; after all, in Australia he has already produced five (5) Gr.1 winners:
Gytrash, Santa Ana Lane, Vega Magic Vega One and Arapaho
, as well as five (5) Gr.2 winners, along with five (5) Gr3 Winners, five (5) Listed Race Winners and thirteen (13) Stakes placegetters.
