Nobody else would have won on CHILCOTIN here, but Brenton Avdulla was at his competitive best and with balance and determination was the difference between defeat and victory.

CHILCOTIN won Race 3 at Hawkesbury on Sunday 24-2-19, the RYGATE RACECOURSE SURVEYORS Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1500m.

CHILCOTIN & Brenton Avdulla lead the way

He defeated ONTHETAKE by 0.11 length and third was DOOSEY 1.21 lengths away with ABERRATION in fourth spot 2.17 lengths from CHILCOTIN. They ran 1:31.52 coming home a slick 34.78 secs.

CHILCOTIN was sent to the races the best he has ever looked by Gerald Ryan and his team.

The horse was the pick of the yard and was covered in dapples and a coat that was gleaming.

CHILCOTIN had been disappointing his past couple of runs but whilst he had genuine excuses, it was Gerald who couldn’t believe how the horse had been “working like Tarzan but racing like Jane.”

Gerald chatted about the idea of removing the blinkers from the horse to keep his mind on the job.

We agreed and the gear change was made and his work on Tuesday morning suggested we were on the right path. So it proved to be, with CHILCOTIN turning his form around and peeling off a tough win.

Starting at $7.00 ($9.00 was found at one point in the betting ring !), the race panned out as we had envisaged when developing pre-race tactics to give the horse every opportunity to succeed.

Dynamic Syndications had 2 runners in the race and our other runner ABERRATION (Billy Owen) with barrier 1 would go to the front as per his normal racing pattern and CHILCOTIN (Brenton Avdulla) would roll across from barrier 5 and sit at ABERRATION’s girth. From here we anticipated the other runners in the race would take a sit and our pair should get a comfortable time in front and dictate the pace.

Then from the 650m rev-up the tempo to make those chasing come off the bit and find it difficult to get past our boys.

The race panned out to script over the first 200m and ABERRATION controlled the fence with CHILCOTIN at its girth. Then at the 700m CHILCOTIN moved up to eyeball ABERRATION and the pair slipped 2 lengths in front at the point of the home straight.

Our runners were sitting 1st / 2nd at the 250m with CHILCOTIN having established a length lead with just one other ONTHETAKE the runner-up, who had a sit in behind the speed, giving chase.

At this point ABERRATION could keep going and started to tire but CHILCOTIN had a length break on the runner-up with 100m to run.

Under vigour, CHILCOTIN kept responding to Brenton’s urging and in a tough, determined grind to the post, CHILCOTIN maintained his position and recorded a courageous win.
