TRAPEZE ARTIST – A Synopsis of a Champion

A four-time Gr.1 winner by a Champion sire from the Champion Danehill male line.

His fourth dam is a Golden Slipper winner tracing to a full-sister to immortal Phar Lap and he has Gr.1 winners under the first three dams.

At the Pinnacle among sire sons of Champion Sire and Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 winner SNITZEL (Redoute’s Choice-Snippets’ Lass by Snippets) with seven (7) wins to 1400m and earnings of $5.56m, Trapeze Artist was Australia’s Champion 3YO Colt of 2017-18 (Timeform 126).

His wins as a 3yo included the T.J. Smith-Gr.1, Golden Rose-Gr.1 and All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1.

He continued that good form at four, winning the Canterbury Stakes-Gr.1 (1300m) at Randwick on March 9 in a record 1:14.19 (33.67) beating Shoals at what was to be his penultimate start.

His inaugural Service Fee was set at $88,000.

“It’s a real privilege to stand Trapeze Artist,” Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson said.

“He’s a record-breaking machine, a four-time Gr.1 winner who is just a phenomenal athlete and is by the best stallion in the country.”

Trapeze Artist, who was retained and raced by his breeders after not reaching his $300,000 reserve at the 2016 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

He is a handsome bay son of the Domesday (by Red Ransom) mare Treppes. She is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Crawl.

He danced every dance for his owners, the Vieira family, and trainer, Gerald Ryan, from the time he first stepped out on to the track on February 4, 2017.

He won by two lengths on debut at two in a Beaumont (Newcastle) race record 1:14.13 for 1250m.

He also claimed the Black Opal-Gr.3 (1200m) in Canberra and was third in the ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 behind Invader on a heavy (8) surface at Randwick.

It was a similar story at his previous run in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 at Rosehill where he struck a track rated heavy (10) in finishing sixth of 16 behind She Will Reign after racing third for most of the journey.

Put away for a break after five starts at two, the colt resumed on August 19, 2017 with a sixth to Dracarys in the Up&Coming-Gr.3 after leading for most of the trip, where the 1300m race run in a record 1:14.76.

He then won a Rosehill trial before finishing fourth in the Stan Fox-Gr.2 behind Gold Standard on September 9. He next stepped out in the Golden Rose-Gr.1 (1400m) at Rosehill (Good 3) on September 23.

This proved a mighty run for Trapeze Artist (Tye Angland) who was sitting sixth at the 800m and 400m, racing four wide without cover, caught there due to an outside barrier, and came home with a withering run to beat the filly Champagne Cuddles by a record margin of 4.25 lengths. The winner’s stablemate and favourite Menari, also by Snitzel, was a half-neck back in third, and the race was run in 1:22.41.

Gerald Ryan said after Trapeze Artist had won so easily; “I have been saying for two weeks this horse has been flying under the radar, but because of the path I’ve taken with this colt, people just forgot about him.

“I put blinkers on him in the Black Opal and he peaked that day, and I kept telling his owners that he was only being aimed at one race and that was the Golden Rose.”

An unplaced run down the Flemington straight 1200m behind Merchant Navy in the Coolmore-Gr.1 followed on November 4 before a break.

Trapeze Artist tuned up with a Rosehill 900m trial win on January 22, 2018, before tackling the older sprinters in the Expressway Stakes-Gr.2 (1200m) at Rosehill, sitting second for most of the journey before a slashing 1.25 length win over Showtime (Snitzel) in 1:10.41 on a track rated soft (5).

He tried to lead all the way in the Hobartville-Gr.2 (1400m), winding up fourth (1.6 len) behind Kementari on February 24 and was then third (1.75 len) behind that horse in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m) after leading at the 400m on March 10.

He took on some of the country’s best older sprinters next time out, lining up for the T.J. Smith-Gr.1 (1200m) at Randwick on April 18, reuniting with Tye Agland, and caused an upset when he powered past Everest hero Redzel (also by Snitzel) to claim the $2.5m sprint in 1:08.29 (33.89), eclipsing Black Caviar’s race record from 2011 to score by two lengths with In Her Time in third.

“When Bert (Vieira) twisted my arm about running him (TJ Smith), I thought I’ll have to draw on all my expertise and what I’ve been taught on how to do it, and it’s worked,” Ryan said.

Another Gr.1 beckoned the horse/rider combination on April 21 when they stepped out in the All-Aged Stakes-Gr.1 (1400m) at Randwick, and it was another triumph for the duo.

Trapeze Artist scored a narrow win over multiple Gr.1 winner Le Romain and Showtime, setting a track record (1:20.33) and prompting his trainer to declare he could be “top of the world” as a four-year-old.

“I’d like to see him keep racing. I’d like to come back for The Everest, he’d be sensational in that,” he said as rumours surfaced that studs were bidding as much as $40m to secure the superb stallion prospect.

“I’ve never trained a horse to win three Gr.1 races in a season, he’s up with the best I’ve had.”

Trapeze Artist had his first start at four when third behind Home of the Brave (IRE) in the Theo Marks-Gr.2 (1300m) at Rosehill on September 8, after striking a heavy (8) track and was then fourth (1.7l) behind Santa Ana Lane in the Premiere-Gr.2 (1200m), the winner running a record 1:07.45, before lining up for the $13m Everest (1200m) on a heavy (9) surface at Randwick on October 13, not disgraced when runner-up to Redzel, beaten 1.25 lengths and with Osborne Bulls third, the time of 1:12.03 reflected the unfavourable state of the track.

Given a good break, Trapeze Artist resumed with a fourth in the Expressway-Gr.2 behind Alizee on February 2 this year and then won a Rosehill 1030m trial on March 1 before scoring his fourth Gr.1 win in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m in 1:14.19).

His 1.5 length victory over outstanding mare Shoals landing him another track record at Randwick, all the more meritorious as he led all the way, running the final 600m in 33.67.

Another trial win followed on March 29 and he was retired after injuring a shoulder when seventh behind Santa Ana Lane in the T.J. Smith-Gr.1 on April 6.

From 20 starts Trapeze Artist won seven races, was once second, twice third and fourth four times for earnings of $5,568,750, his 15 “first four” finishes highlighting his remarkable consistency in the best sprint company.

There is very little more we can say about his sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice-Snippets’ Lass by Snippets), whose sire and dam sire both won the Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1 (1100m) and were also Gr.1 winners at two.

Below was the commentary report Dean Watt wrote about the yearling during three (3) pre-sale selection criteria inspections prior to the lot being offered for sale.

Commentary in brackets has been added in for description purpose so non-horse industry participants may have a better understanding of Dean’s sales notes.

The notes are:

* A top walker – purposeful, balanced, with fluid motion.

* Importantly this yearling Tracks Truly and has a Very Good Overstep (Propulsion)

* Strong well defined top line (back) with the withers set well back

* Excellent - Deep girth (Lung capacity)

* Intelligent Head - Wide Forehead - Soft Kind Eye

* Has a strong reign (neck & distance from Poll to Withers)

* Good width of jaw and corresponds with big Nostrils (for windflow capacity access)

* Conformationally front legs are excellent with nice short cannon (which is technically very good – means longer forearm covers more ground per stride)

* Powerful hindquarter with excellent length of to its croup and excellent hip:hock ratio (propulsion levers for driving forward)

* Well developed Gaskins (like Human biceps = strength) which are strong and deep into hocks

* Correct angulation to pasterns and shoulders (correct 60 degree angles)

* Hoofs are well structured and all 4 are symmetrical with good heels.

* Stands over good ground (length to back in correct proportion to balance of individual)

* Nice style of individual by the sire with classic middle-distance shape and style

She is immature at the moment but on make and shape, she gives every indication she has potential to be a pre-Christmas 2yo.

Commencing weeks prior to attending the sale complex:

When researching which lots to inspect in the weeks prior to the sale, we look for certain genetic factors that increase the chance of the yearling being a superior athlete.

This pedigree had certain ancestor duplications which we are seeking, to give what we consider, a balanced blend of speed and endurance. Full details of the Pedigree Evaluation is located in our Pedigree Notes Section of this website.

Dr Tim Roberts - Contracted Veterinarian to Dynamic Syndications

Our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts inspected the yearling prior to purchase and believed this youngster to be a quality individual and a chance of being a successful equine athlete with no visual clinical issues likely to prevent it from reaching its racing potential.

Before purchase, the 42 X-Rays deposited in the sale ground X-Ray Repository facility were examined. There were no abnormal findings noted.

The horse was approved by Dr. Roberts for Dynamic Syndications to purchase in the salering.

After purchase, an endoscopic test on the horse's airway was performed and the result was the horse had normal function.

Also a blood test was performed and revealed no abnormal findings.

Considering this superb genetic pedigree, the commercial value of the sire, excellent athletic conformation and overall size, strength and scope, we rated this yearling as an "MUST HAVE" purchase.

Dean Watt as a licensed Commercial Agent and a longstanding Member of the Bloodstock Agents Federation of Australia, is approved to offer Market Appraisals as to the Commercial Valuation of thoroughbreds.

Dean Watt evaluates each yearling that passes its Veterinary Inspection as to the maximum Commercial Value after taking in such factors as:

* The Individual's Conformation
* Sales of Progeny with Similar Commercial Pedigrees by the Sire
* The Sire’s Service Fee both current and at date of Conception
* Sales of other progeny from the 1st & 2nd Dams in pedigree
   based upon the Service Fee value of the sire of that mating.
* Any Sale recorded of the Dam herself.
* Racetrack Appraisal of the immediate family (Siblings / Dam).
* Working horses in the immediate family (Likelihood of the family
   improving commercially by producing a Stakes Winner
   in the near future)
* Historical Sale Average of the Actual Sale being Conducted.
* Current Economic & Political environment.

A specific formula is applied to each of these variables and a figure is determined.

This is our Ceiling Price. The price we are prepared to bid up to in a bidding war in the Salering. The maximum price we set at which we will withdraw from the heat of battle.

We set a strict ceiling price on all the horses that pass Veterinarian Inspection and write that figure on the Catalogue Page of each lot that passes to ensure that we do not make bidding errors during the auction.

Having completed all our Due Diligence reviews based upon Pedigree, Conformation, Veterinary Acceptance and Market Appraisal, we are always prepared to bid up to our limit to secure what we considered is an outstanding individual.

Valuation Price:

Considering HER outstanding conformation and the strength and depth of the female family and the pedigree genetics this individual was secured at a price representing terrific value to the team at Dynamic.

We had valued the yearling at $120,000 (+ one bid $130,000).

We felt she was a terrific type and the page added value. The Dam has had 3 yearlings offered for sale previously with her first by Exceed And Excel selling for $525,000, then a Capitalist for $85,000 (Now a Winner) and a Street Boss passed in for $100,000. 

The sire TRAPEZE ARTIST in 2025 had a Service Fee reduction to $33,000 from $55,000. We felt this individual was at least a 4-times Service Fee which 4 x $30,000 = $120,000 + one bid if we were caught on the wrong leg in the ring. 

To secure the filly at $100,000  was $20,000 (16.7%) less than our market appraisal of the true commercial value and this represented exceptional value that we now pass onto our owners.

- Transport from the Magic Millions Yearling Sale to our Agistment Farm

All Horse Husbandry costs to 30 JUNE 26 which will include:

- Breaking-in Fee = Paid

- 2 x Sessions in work with Pre-Trainer = Paid

- Agistment = Paid

- Various: Transport, Standard Veterinary, Farrier, Dentist costs to 30 JUNE 25

- Statutory Registration Fees with Racing NSW to register the horse (*one-off)

- Miscellaneous holding costs, etc., etc., etc.

Then ……..  Add in the Government’s 10% GST on the Share Sale Price = Paid (*one-off)

Full Transparency: A detailed schedule of every cost incurred in the establishment of the Share Price from Fall of Hammer to 30 JUNE 26 is included as an annexure to the Product Disclosure Statement for each promotion.


Ongoing Costs:

From 1 JULY 26: Ongoing costs - we advise owners to budget an average of $13.50 per day per 5% Share over 12 months ($4,925 per annum / $410 per month) which we estimate should cover most / all cost.

All accounts are sent monthly in arrears directly to each owner and are due and payable within 30 days.

All prizemoney won is paid directly by the Racing Authority in Each State to the individual owners bank account; details supplied by the owner at registration of the horse.

5% SHARES are $10,250 inc GST and ALL COSTS to 30/6/26

*2.5% SHARES are $5,125 inc GST (*standard conditions apply)
