EDUCATORS “BREAKING - IN” REPORT
Educator: GAVIN EDWARDS
Property: FINDLEY @ BERRIMA (NSW)
ABOUT THE YEARLING:
CATBIRD ex EVIRENE -"This filly is a lovely package in the respect she has everything going for her in type, movement, temperament and intelligence. She has a natural controlled energy which gives you a great feeling about her. She’s a runner."
Gavin Edwards - Findley

ABOUT THE EDUCATORS:
Findley, situated close to Berrima NSW, is a purpose built property and for the education and pre-training of young thoroughbred horses. The property’s facilities include: a covered round yard and an outdoor round yard, a sand training track with barriers and tie up stalls and they have installed the “Monty Roberts Hallway System”. The property also consists of good sized yards (all with shelters) and two stable barns.
Findley is owned and operated by husband & wife team Gavin and Ele Edwards who reside at Findley, along with their committed staff. This ensures the property has 24/7 surveillance.
Gavin Edwards has worked in the thoroughbred industry as an educator of horses for 23 years. Having worked alongside many accomplished horse educators until establishing his own operation 8 years ago.
Ele Edwards is an outstanding rider of young thoroughbred’s and has a long history of riding with success in equestrian events throughout the United Kingdom. Ele’s petite build makes her an ideal lightweight rider for many immature yearlings.
PRE-TRAINERS REPORT
Pre - Trainer : GARY NICKSON @ Warwick Farm
Gary Nickson is a licenced trainer at Warwick Farm. Gary has trained and also pre-trained horses for Dean Watt since 1981. Gary Nickson is an intergral member of the Dynamic Syndications team.
CATBIRD / EVIRENE : " Quality filly, well educated she arrived in perfect condition. She was easy to work and floated along under saddle. She is a real racehorse and shows power under saddle with an easy flowing economic action. Strong and tough with good bone nothing worried her and she ate everything put in her feed bin which is another good sign. One of the best fillies we have had this year. Excellent Chance Chris Waller will be thrilled to train her."

Q) Why did we buy her ?
A) That's easy to answer:
Pedigree: Before the sale: When researching which lots to inspect prior to the sales we look for certain genetic factors that increase the chance of the yearling being a superior athlete. This pedigree had certain ancestor duplications which we are seeking, to give what we consider a balanced blend of speed and endurance. This filly represented that. We identified the following : Ancestor duplications: Buckpasser 5f x 6f ; Pardal 6m x 5f ; Northern Dancer 4m x 5m ; Natalma 5m,5f x 6m ; Hyperion 6f x 6f
Also, it's a commercial pedigree, which allows the opportunity for the filly to become a extremely valuable breeding prospect should she be a high class racehorse.
Conformation: She is an stunning looking individual with very good conformation. She is strong and athletic, stands over good ground; she has a good length of reign, good angulations to her pasterns and shoulders. She has good width of jaw, a deep girth and strong hindquarter. She is a terrific walking filly, very purposeful and tracks truly. Importantly she has a good overstep.
Veterinarian: Our veterinarian inspected the filly prior to purchase and believed her to be a quality individual and an outstanding chance. X-Rays were exmined with no abnormal findings noted. After purchase an endoscopic test on the horse's airway was performed and found her to have normal function.
Fair Market Value: Considering her superior genetic speed pedigree, the commercial value of the family for the future breeding, her excellent athletic conformation and her overall strength, We rated the filly as an "A++" purchase. We set a strict ceiling price on this horse and were quite prepared to bid up to our limit to secure her. I valued the filly at $120,000 and we were prepared to pay our ceiling price for her. I believe we secured a quality individual at exceptional value.
OUR SALE NOTES ON THE FILLY

1) She was a stunning individual who had enormous presence when she was presented from her box for inspection. She looked strong and athletic and like she would be a 2yo running type that would grow into an even stronger 3yo sprinter / miler.
2) She had an athletic sprinter / runners build.
3) She walked with plenty of purpose and covered a lot of ground Great overstep and tracked truly.
4) She had terrific width to her jaw and nostrils, deep girth, good skeleton structure, a good length to her rein, strong shoulder and neck and a powerful hindquarter.
5) She was alert and intelligent with a good eye.

CATBIRD
STOP PRESS : Catbird - Premature Death of the Stallion
10 June 2007
Sad news from Yarraman Park Stud this week with the passing of Golden Slipper winner Catbird, who was put down on Saturday after failing to recover from serious leg complications due to post surgical laminitis.
Catbird was retired to Yarraman Park in 2000 following a stellar career under the care of popular country trainer Frank Cleary that netted five wins and $1.7 million in prizemoney for his owner Ken Jones.
The powerful son of Danehill (USA) is best remembered for winning the 1999 Group One STC Golden Slipper Stakes in which he defeated Align and Shogun Lodge, providing a deserved victory for his connections, who had failed narrowly to win the race in 1992 with popular speedster Clan O’Sullivan.
“Catbird was a wonderful horse with a delightful temperament and will be sadly missed by everyone who had anything to do with him,” said studmaster Arthur Mitchell.
The leading first season sire by individual winners in the 2003/2004 season with 15 to his credit, Catbird went right on with the job in subsequent years, his overall record currently boasting 193 winners with progeny earnings in excess of $11.1 million.
Catbird is the sire of 25 stakes horses led by Group One WATC Derby winner Cat’s Fun, Group Two STC Todman Stakes winner Diego Garcia and Group Three winners Catechuchu, Collate and Cateclipse, plus rising Hong Kong based star Green Birdie. (Our filly is bred on the same cross Green Birdie !)
Catbird will have two more crops of foals to be sold at major sales in 2008 and 2009, with some outstanding weanlings on the ground and 150 mares covered by him last season.

VETERINARY REPORT :
“Our Due Diligence is your Quality Assurance”
This yearling passed a complex physical veterinary inspection
by our contracted veterinarian
Dr TIM ROBERTS.

Dr TIM ROBERTS
Dr Roberts has been working closely with Dean Watt as Dean’s contracted veterinarian at yearling sales and stable work for the past 10 years. Both Tim and Dean have an excellent working relationship which has resulted in the high rate of success on the racetrack.
Tim , Dean and Adam (The Apprentice) inspecting a yearling's "Action"
as it is being paraded at the sales.
Tim has been an instrumental factor in Dean’s success.
X-RAYS being inspected in the X-Ray Repository at the Sales
All yearlings that Dean identifies as possible purchases MUST pass a detailed physical examination by Dr Roberts. If a yearling passes this examination then Dr Roberts and his equine practice partner Dr Brett Warren inspect a full set of 42 x-rays. If the yearling passes this inspection and the vets concur that there were no abnormalities present on x-ray then the yearling is approved for purchase. After being purchased, each yearling is allowed to be examined at the sale by endoscope to check its windflow. Our yearling was examined endoscopically and was found to normal in appearance and function.
