Our Richard and Will Freedman trained honest 4YO Mare HORIZONS (The Autumn Sun / Sabanci) was back in the winner’s circle at Canterbury on Wednesday having won Race 5 the HELLBENT YEARLINGS HANDICAP over 1900m, but she had to do it the hard way. HORIZONS “WON IT” on the Track and “WON IT” in again in the Stewards Room when connections successfully defended the win, when a protest of second verse first was quickly dismissed.

The cream of New Zealand’s yearling crop has been revealed for a landmark Karaka 2026, with a total of 1009 yearlings catalogued. The catalogue for Karaka 2026 is now online. Karaka 2026 will take place at the Karaka Sales Centre from 25 - 29 January, marking the 100th National Yearling Sale in New Zealand. In the history of the 100 years of the NZB National Yearling Sale, many legends of the racetrack have emerged. Among the historic names Phar Lap (NZ), Rising Fast (NZ), Tulloch (NZ), Dulcify (NZ), Octagonal (NZ) and So You Think (NZ).

The catalogue for the 2026 Classic Yearling Sale – the fastest growing success story of the Southern Hemisphere’s early-season auctions – is now available online. A total of 798 lots have been finalised for the sale, which will be held at Riverside Stables in Sydney from February 8-10. It features progeny of 113 Individual Sires, the likes of Extreme Choice, Snitzel, I Am Invincible, Zoustar, Too Darn Hot, Ole Kirk, Wootton Bassett, Written Tycoon, Street Boss, The Autumn Sun, Dundeel, Justify, Ghaiyyath, Bivouac etc. There is also representation from an exciting crop of 14 first season sires including Anamoe, Artorius, Hitotsu, In The Congo, Jacquinot, State Of Rest, etc.

When we spied Lot 155 being offered by Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Stud, this 2YO gelding captured our imagination. A lovely, big strong type, who will continue to develop into a spectacular looking, middle-distance 3YO prospect, it was the video of his breeze-up that we loved, before we even read his pedigree page. Then when we saw he was purposely bred to a proven cross capable of producing Derby success (our followers know how much we desire to add that trophy to the showcase), the colt intrigued us further.
