First 2YO Race in Victoria and new sire WANDJINA gets his First Stakes Horse

08 Oct 18

The Maribyrnong Trial Stakes was the first two-year-old race held in Victoria this season and Snitzel’s Group 1 winning son Wandjina got his Sire career off to a good start by siring his first stakes horse at Flemington on Saturday when the Tony McEvoy trained colt Grand Scholar showed excellent potential with a brave third to the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Unite and Conquer in the Listed VRC Maribyrnong Trial.

Grand Scholar had been second in a Morphettville trial last month before winning a jumpout in 47.10.

In this 2yo stakes race, Grand Scholar showed good pace to track the winner Unite and Conquer and fought on strongly to the line to hold third place in the 1000 metre scamper up the straight.

Grand Scholar will be better suited when the distances increase.

A $120,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Newgate Farm draft, Grand Scholar is a half-brother to Group 2 placed Sort After from the Group 3 winning More Than Ready (USA) stakes-winner Patronyme.

The Wandjina progeny are proving to be precocious and easy to train with a number of them showing up at the recent trials.

This is surprising many industry participants who anticipated the progeny would be natural 3yo types so to have 2yo’s out and about is a good sign for the sire.

Wandjina was Snitzel’s first $1million yearling and his stunning good looks matched his ability.

Trained by GAI WATERHOUSE – Wandjina was Gai’s fastest 2yo that year and went on to claim Gr1 success as a 3yo.

Wandjina stands at Newgate at a fee of $22,000.

In last week’s Sportsman, there was a write-up about Grand Scholar who was being watched. The story read:

GRAND SCHOLAR was another two-year-old from the Tony McEvoy stable to perform well last Friday’s straight course jumpouts and the daughter of Wandjina looked very tractable winning her heat in 47.10. McEvoy has a strong team of juveniles that will make their debuts at either Flemington next Saturday or Caulfield a week later and Grand Scholar should make her presence felt when she heads to the races for the first time.

Dynamic Syndications currently have available an exciting 2yo Filly by WANDJINA.

Here is a quick snapshot on the progress:

WANDJINA showed he will be a serious stallion at the Randwick 2yo Trials where he had four (4) youngsters to trial producing:

1 x Winner: Honey Go Lightly – The fastest of the 2yo fillies to compete on the morning

3 x Thirds: Vaporizing, Autocratic, Redoute’s Spirit.

Now with Grand Scholar stakes placed on debut in Victoria, it shows that his progeny perform on the racetrack.
