Dynamic Syndications having been listening to Ciaron Maher and stable foreman Annabel Neasham for weeks and weeks telling us at Dynamic Syndications that 3yo Filly CATALANIC is an out and out stayer and once we get out to a long trip she will come into her own.

On ANZAC DAY at Cessnock CATALANIC (Medaglia d’Oro x Catalan Bay) proved what Ciaron has been saying.

At only her 5th career start (all this preparation), she took on older seasoned horses over the 2700m trip in the Hero of Romani” - Stayers Cup – a Benchmark 50 Handicap.

CATALANIC as a yearling

Despite our filly being a maiden and taking on horses that were older and have won races, CATALANIC led them a merry dance throughout to score hard held.

She defeated the Kris Lees trained 4yo mare Red Lily (Redoute’s Choice / Serenade Lily) by 3.36 lens with Southern Delight (an 8yo gelding / winner of 4 races) finishing 5.99 lengths away from us in third spot.

After the finishing post

They ran 2:50.93 which is in line with last year’s inaugural running of the Cup of 2:50.40.

Special mention to our jet pilot Luke Cumberland who rode the perfect race to ensure the event was a true staying test and our improving filly lived up to her exposed training ability in what was not much more than a working gallop.

She wouldn’t have blown out a candle such was her excellent condition. Luke commented – “She just keeps going. I turned it into a staying test from the 800m and they had no answer. She can’t quicken but she can maintain a good cruising speed for a long way. She’ll run two mile for sure.”

As CATALANIC matures it’s exciting to consider what level she may reach because genuine staying class mares are hard to come by and there are plenty of races available at distances starting from 2400m to 3200m.

She has now raced 5 occasions: 1 Win, 0 seconds, 1 third, 1 fourth.

CATALANIC’s Dam CATALAN BAY won 3 races to 1600m, MRC Heathmont 2YO H., Brava Jeannie H., MVRC Hambros & Cahill Lawyers H., 4th Moonee Valley Fillies Oaks Classic, 1500m Gr.2, SAJC Schweppervescence Centaurea S., 2000m LR.

MEDAGLIA D’ORO has sired 4 Gr1 Winners to win at 2400m or further and a 5 Stakes Winners at 2400m. Whilst 3 of his Gr1 winners have won up to 2000m and a further 12 have won up to 2000m. This means that from the sires 126 Stakes Winners he has sired 24 Stakes Winners including 7 Gr1 Winners who have won at 2000m or further. That’s almost 20% of his Stakes Winners have won races at 2000m or further.

Overall, He has produced 76 horses to have won races from 2000m + where 14 of these were Stakes Winners at these distances that have won a total of 20 Stakes Races.

At 2400m he sired 78 runners: 17 Winners; 22 Race Wins; 14 placed and 3 Stakes Winners.

This is the same Cross that’s produced 10 Stakes Winners including this seasons Gr1 NZ Derby Winner Crown Prosecutor, and Listed Winner King Louis who won at 2000m. Other racetrack stars  bred on the cross include Vancouver, Astern, Nostradamus, Spectroscope, Pohutukawa, Flit, Federal and this seasons early Slipper favourite Tessera.

So as can be seen, in this filly’s female family bloodlines are stout and she was purchased with an intent to aim at the Cup races as an older horse.

Mated with Medaglia D’Oro our filly is bred to be stout hence why it was no surprise to the trainer that she bowled around so easily in this race.

At least we have ticked off the first hurdle, the fact she is a winner and she has won beyond 2400m which sets her up nicely into the future as an older mare.

We take this opportunity to thank CIARON MAHER and his team in Sydney led by Annabel Neasham for their belief and expertise to achieve this result so soon in her staying career.
